Waleed Mohamed Shaalan, a native of Egypt, was doing post-graduate work in civil engineering.
Published reports say he was routinely in daily contact with his family through Internet messages, but he didn’t make contact on the day of the shooting, according to his father, a deputy minister for public works and water resources in Egypt.
According to the Muslim Students Association National, Shaalan was married with a 15-month-old son. He told his family Sunday that he planned to come home in May to take his wife and son back to the United States.
