Partahi Lumbantoruan, a 34-year-old third-year doctoral student from Indonesia, was studying civil engineering.
He completed his graduate and undergraduate work at Parahyanangan University in Bandung, West Java.
His family said they sold off property and cars to pay his tuition, according to The Associated Press.
He dreamed of being a teacher, they said.
"We tried everything to completely finance his studies in the United States," said his father, Tohom Lumbantoruan, who was quoted in the Indonesian press. "We only wanted him to succeed in his studies, but … he met a tragic fate."
