Nineteen-year-old Caitlin Hammaren came to Virginia Tech from her New York home near the Catskills. She joined a sorority and was a resident assistance.
Hammaren, a sophomore, studied international politics and French.
"She actually wanted to go into international politics," Martha Murray, the school superintendent in Hammaren’s old district, told the New York Post.
While in high school in Westtown, N.Y., she was a member of the mixed chorus and chamber choir, and she played violin in the all-county orchestra.
"Not too many other students I’ve had have been like her. Maybe a handful," Vic Izzo, the choral director, told the Times Herald-Record in New York. "If you knew Caitlin, you knew her as a sister."
