Ross Abdallah AlameddineMeaghan Daniell lost contact with her childhood friend Ross Abdallah Alameddine for several years. When they reconnected again recently, it was as if no time had passed.

"He’s not one of those people you ever forget," Daniell said in an e-mail. "You could go without speaking to him for years and take comfort knowing whenever you think about him that he's taking good care of himself and his family and everyone he loves."

Alameddine was killed Monday in his French class.

The sophomore English major came from Saugus, Mass., a suburb of Boston. He went to Austin Preparatory School in nearby Reading, Mass.

In a prepared statement, school headmaster Paul J. Moran said, "Ross Alameddine was a bright and engaged student and a truly fine young man. Our prayers and deepest sympathy go out, especially to the Alameddine family, but also to all of the families of this senseless act."

On his Facebook page, friend Jennifer Orcutt wrote, "Ross was an intelligent, funny, easygoing guy who will be greatly missed. His kindness knew few limits, and we are all less without him. At only 20 years old, Ross made such an impact on so many people. Extraordinarily witty and sarcastic, strong-willed and a grammar god far superior to all of us."

Alameddine, 20, leaves his sister and his mother, Lynette, a nurse.
